English Shepherd: An Original American Farm Collie

Bulletin: The Puppies have arrived!

In the best tradition of the "Old Scotch Collie", English Shepherds are a farmer's best friend: They excel at herding, standing watch, guarding the family and the flock from unwelcome intruders, enforcing the farmer's routine, and having an undying loyalty and affectionate bond for their family.

At one time, farm collies like the English Shepherd were a fixture on family farms across America. Over the years, as family's sold their farms to corporate agricultural businesses, the "Ol' Sheps" were no longer needed. Now, as more people are re-establishing small farms, the English Shepherd is re-finding favor, once again gracing the front porches of America's family farms.

If one wants a collie for sheepherding trials, or other intensive sheep herding, then a Border Collie may be more appropriate. If one wants a collie for the show ring, without the need for herding, then a "Lassie" type collie would be better suited. If one wants a faithful companion that can perform countless farm duties and protect hearth and home, then an English Shepherd is the choice. See this comparison of herding collie types.

We are proud to be a part of the careful reconstitution of an important American working dog breed, the English Shepherd. These testimonials from the early 1900's will help you garner a deeper appreciation for this near-vanished breed.
